Those fun, harmless-looking energy drinks in the colorful bottles that you see everywhere these days? Those beverages with “natural” ingredients, marketed to all of us — especially our kids — as an alternative to soda? Turns out these drinks aren’t so harmless.

The Aiken Standard (aikenstandard.com) - By Brian Parr

Monday, May 14, 2012

I had the opportunity to speak to the students at Mead Hall school about exercise, nutrition and health recently. I enjoyed the challenge of providing information that would be relevant for everyone in the room, including students in preschool through middle school and teachers. It turns out that the advice I gave the youngest children applied to everyone, so my job was an easy one.

Soft Drinks: Public Enemy No.1 In Obesity Fight?

CNN - By Caleb Hellerman

Friday, April 27, 2012

Pushing her meal cart into the hospital room, a research assistant hands out tall glasses of reddish-pink liquid, along with a gentle warning: “Remember, you guys have to finish all your Kool-Aid.”

For the final two weeks of the study, volunteers drank three of the sweet concoctions daily — about 500 calories of added sugar, or 25% of all calories for the adult women in the study. Within just two weeks, their blood chemistry was out of whack. In one striking change, the volunteers had elevated levels of LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease.

Really? To Lower Your Risk of Diabetes, Eat Breakfast

The New York Times - By Anahad O’Connor

Monday April 30, 2012

People who skip that all-important first meal of the day, studies show, suffer setbacks in mood, memory and energy levels. They are also more likely to gain weight, in part because of excess eating later in the day. Research on the habits of people taking part in the National Weight Control Registry, a long-running study of successful dieters, for example, shows that about 80 percent eat breakfast daily.

But emerging research suggests another advantage to consistently eating breakfast: a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Concord, NH - By the slimmest of margins, the Senate approved a bill requiring health insurance companies to pay naturopathic providers for the same services as regular doctors provide.  House Bill 351 was approved on a 13-11 vote after more than an hour of debate, much of it over whether the bill would be another mandate on health insurance companies.

Improving Mood, Blood Sugar In Diabetes With Naturopathic Care

Medical News Today - by Petra Rattue

Monday, April 23, 2012

About 26 million Americans suffer from type 2 diabetes. A study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine has now revealed that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), in adjunction to conventional medicine, holds various positive benefits for people with type 2diabetes, compared with those who only receive conventional medicine. For instance, better eating and exercise habits lower blood sugar levels, improve moods and give the person a stronger sense of control over their condition.

Ryan Bradley, ND, MPH, director of the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Wellness Clinic at Bastyr Center for Natural Health declared:

“The news is encouraging for those fighting the disease. Patients involved in the study cited the benefits of trying different approaches to find the best ways to minimize the effects of type 2 diabetes. In many ways, that strategy mirrors our partnership with Group Health in this research study – working together to discover the best possible solutions.”

The lesson here is to listen to your cravings and treat them with a healthy medicine to keep them in check and avoid uncontrollable munching.

Here are my six simple ways to help cure your sweet tooth cravings:
